Graham Kendrick tells the story behind the song about the biblical character Caleb.
Caleb was somebody who never gave up on the promise of God even though his whole generation fell into unbelief and fear. Three times it says of Caleb that he was of a different spirit, that he was wholehearted. He gets that endorsement from God.

Give me this mountain
I will not be turning back
Give me this mountain
For your glory
We have walked the wilderness
And have proved your faithfulness
And known your presence
And some have stumbled on the way
By grace alone we’re here today
Here in your presence
The race is not yet run
And battles to be won
But in your strength I’m strong
Give me this mountain
I will not be turning back
Give me this mountain
For your glory
Give me this mountain
Jesus’ blood has overcome
So I’m not quitting till it’s done
In your name we rise and go
On to victory if we know
That you are with us
With angel armies all around
Till on the mountaintop we stand
All praising Jesus
Though giants bar the way
Our God is strong to save
You made me bold to say
Give me this mountain
I will not be turning back
Give me this mountain
For your glory
Give me this mountain
Jesus’ blood has overcome
So I’m not quitting till it’s done

Scriptures:
Numbers 13 and 14, and Joshua 14: 6-15
This song obviously came from the story in the scriptures of Caleb. Three times it says of Caleb that he was of a different spirit, that he was wholehearted. And actually he gets that endorsement from God.
As you get a bit older in the faith you see how important it is to keep going and Caleb was somebody who never gave up on the promise of God, even though, in his case, his whole generation fell into unbelief and fear, so he had to go for another 40 - 45 years.
It's obvious from the story that when it finally came to the time he's just as on fire as he ever was, just as wholehearted and that's when he says 'give me this mountain'.
It was the hill country, it was Hebron, and that was the place that actually terrified his generation the most because that's where the great warriors and the giants and the high walls of fortified cities were.
'I'm 85 years old now' he says, that's amazing. 'I can fight just as well as I ever did'. 'Give me the mountain, give me the place of the giants'.
I think it's great song for anybody of any age who wants to grab a hold of that wholehearted determination to never give up, and of course mountains can represent anything that we are struggling with - any giants, any obstacles in our way.
That determination of faith that says 'I'm not quitting til it's done'.
